Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) at Work

Jennifer Koretsky asked:

ght (c) 2009 Jennifer Koretsky

Life at work can be difficult for many people with adult Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). You may find yourself feeling chronically disorganized and stressed out at the office. Here are 5 quick tips for managing your ADD challenges at work:

1. Manage your stress both in and out of work. Many of you know what I always say about stress: Stress Management = ADD Management! The more stressed out you are, the harder it is to be on time, stay organized, focus, and get along well with others. Real Life Example: One client I work with locks herself in the ladies room and meditates when things get stressful at work.

2. Clearly separate your personal and professional time. When you mix your personal and professional lives, you open yourself up to more stress, and a lack of focus results. Stay in the present moment. Focus on personal matters at home, and leave professional matters at the office. Real Life Example: A former client instructs his wife, kids, and friends NOT to email him at work. Instead, he directs them to his personal email account, which he only checks at home.

3. Take a lunch (or other break.) While it’s tempting to work through lunch when the pressure is on, this isn’t always the best choice for an adult with ADD. Because we have a low tolerance for frustration, we need to relax and recharge periodically during the day in order to function optimally. Real Life Example: When I worked in a corporate office, I took advantage of my employer-sponsored gym membership and worked out during my lunch hour. This helped me burn off stress, and increased my energy for the afternoon. Now that I work from home, I take my dogs for a long walk during my lunch break. (Yes, I’m talking about little Rascal and Trixie, who are now TV stars in their own right, thanks to The TODAY Show!)

4. Work with your natural energy flow. Pay attention to how you feel during the day, and you will soon discover that there are certain times in your day when you consistently feel alert, energized, and focused. Take advantage of these times! Use them to work on projects that require more brainpower or sustained focus. Real Life Example: One client avoids scheduling meetings for 60 minutes after she eats lunch. For about one hour after eating, she feels tired and has a hard time concentrating. Rather than struggling to pay attention during these times, she does her best to avoid placing herself into a difficult situation.

5. Take 15 minutes every day to plan your time and to-dos. The key to time management (and project management) is planning in advance. To-do lists are essential, because they help you keep track of what’s going on. Scheduling your day helps you feel more in control of your time, and helps you set realistic expectations for what you can accomplish. Real Life Example: I recommend that EVERY adult with ADD take 15 minutes a day–every day– to review your to-do list and plan your day in advance. I do it, too! How do you manage your ADD on the job?

What is it like to have Attention Deficit Disorder?

Lurver asked:

I’m writing a skit for psychology and i want to know what it feels like to have ADD. I was kind of thinking that i would have a character sitting and pretending to be listening to someone that is talking, and have someone who is like their thoughts and what is really going on in their head, but i don’t really know much about the disorder.

Who do I go to for a diagnosis for attention deficit disorder?

Luke asked:

OK i know I should go to a medical centre for a referral but I do not believe in letting a doctor get money for giving me an address especially since they have misdiagnosed me with things before. So can anyone give me a number or website to contact about getting a formal diagnosis in NSW? and I have checked plenty of websites to the point of knowing the possible cause of ADD in myself so I am somewhat informed of ADD

Does the internet / email cause people to develop A-D-D Attention Deficit Disorder?

brb42 asked:

I know people that check their email at night when they wake up to go to the bathroom. I also know people who check their email 100 times a day or tweet all day long. Is this causing people to get A-D-D?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - Adhd

Samson Omotosho, PhD, APRN/PMHN asked:

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, is a common mental health disorder in children. The three cardinal symptoms of ADHD are impulsiveness, hyperactivity and inattention. Nearly everyone shows some of these behaviors at times, but the symptoms lasts more than 6 months in ADHD. Impulsiveness means that the child acts too quickly without first thinking. Hyperactivity means the child cannot sit still. He or she walks, runs, or climbs around when others are seated and talks when others are talking. Inattention means the child’s mind wanders frequently from the task at hand. The child may start a line of thought or a task without completing it because the concentration does not last long enough.

Sometimes the symptoms of ADHD may at first look like normal behaviors. The symptoms usually start before the age of six. Children with ADHD may get distracted easily and forget things often. They may switch quickly from one activity to another, refuse to follow directions, daydream frequently, fail to finishing tasks such as house chores and homework, frequently lose toys, books, and school supplies, fidget and squirm, talk nonstop and interrupt others, run around a lot, touch and play with everything they see, blurt out inappropriate comments, and have trouble controlling their emotions.

There is no single test that can tell if a child has ADHD and so, it may take months for a doctor or other clinicians to know if the child has ADHD. Clinicians need time to observe the child for specific symptoms. Sometimes it can be difficult to diagnose a child with ADHD because symptoms may look like other problems. A child may seem quiet and well-behaved, but in fact he or she is having trouble paying attention. A child may act badly in school, but teachers don’t realize that the child has ADHD. So, if a child is frequently having trouble at school, the parent should let the child’s doctor know. Otherwise the symptoms will begin to affect the child’s functioning at home, school, and other social situations. And if untreated, ADHD can linger far into adolescence and adulthood. Any adults that think they may have ADHD should consult a doctor or clinician to be sure.

ADHD is more common in boys than girls, and affects 3 to 5 percent of children in the United States. If any parents or guardians suspect ADHD, they should have the child evaluated by a clinician such as a psychiatrist, nurse practitioner, psychologist, pediatrician, neurologist, or a clinical social worker. The clinician will try to rule out other possible reasons for the child’s behavior, check the child’s school and medical records, talk to the teachers, have the teacher and parents fill out a behavior rating scale for the child, and finally, come up with a diagnosis.

No one knows for sure what causes ADHD. However, since it runs in families, genetics may be a factor. Also, it is believed that there may be a combination of factors. Possible factors include lead from toys, old paint and plumbing; smoking and alcohol during pregnancy; brain injury; and food additives such as artificial coloring. Although some people think refined sugar may cause ADHD, not many research studies support that opinion.

ADHD can be treated. Treatment usually is a combination of medications and therapy. The medications usually help to control the symptoms. In addition, ADHD parenting classes and the use of behavior structure by parents at home and teachers at school can be quite helpful.

Attention Deficit Disorder: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

James S. Pendergraft asked:

Attention deficit disorder (ADD) also referred as Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder usually found in children of elementary school age. This condition begins in childhood and is mostly detected between an ages of four to seven. This situation is typically characterized by learning and behavioral disorders. A child having this disorder needs to be brought up with extra attention and care.

Causes

There is no particular reason resulting in Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Researchers have however pointed to several factors which may cause this condition. They include genetics, physical and social environment and diet. Studies also indicate that as much as 75% of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is heritable to the genetics factor.

Environmental causes include tobacco, alcohol or exposure to smoke during pregnancy. Other important cause which plays a role is complications faced during pregnancy and child birth.

Other important cause is delay or early development of brain structure. For example frontal cortex and lobe are the ones responsible for focused thinking and an ability to control. If there is a delay in there development it can result in ADD.

Symptoms

Common symptoms observed in a child with Attention deficit disorder (ADD) is distractibility, hyperactivity and impulsivity. A child in this condition finds it difficult to perform an assigned task and lacks the ability to focus on important aspects. They may even be not able to complete the task as they move quickly from one given activity to another due to distractions caused by external environment.

Another symptom that can be observed is Inattention and forgetful behavior. A child suffering from ADD will find it extremely difficult to sustain attention in performing any task and even display inattentiveness when spoken directly to. This condition makes a sufferer forgetful even about daily repetitive activities.

Other symptoms include- Frequent daydreaming, difficulty in understanding and following instructions, fidgeting hands and feet, squirming in seat, and difficulty in remaining at one position, talking excessively, behaving aggressively and being restless all the time. Short term memory loss is also one of the symptoms of ADHD.

Treatment

Attention Deficit Disorder can be treated with therapy, medication or a combination of both. Studies have however proved that treating this disorder with both is more effective. A treatment strongly recommended for curing Attention Deficit Disorder is Homeopathy. It is very effective in improving concentration and attention span. Homeopathy is free of side effects and improvement in most of the cases is noted in about two to three months of starting medication.

Therapy includes counseling with psychologist or a psychiatrist for the patients suffering from ADD disorder. Psychotherapy teaches the patients to cope with prevailing symptoms. Behavior therapy is imparted to the parents or teachers so that they can deal with the child’s behavior.

Alternatively psychostimulants are prescribed to the patients by professionals. They are given to balance neurotransmitters or in other words brain chemicals.

If diagnosed and treated early, a child can grow up and adapt to normal routine life.

To Your Health!

Diet For Attention Deficit Disorder - Five Simple Strategies

Robert William Locke asked:

Are you at risk of becoming insane because of your ADHD child? Apart from the question of ADHD meds, you know that the old adage \’you are what you eat\’ is true but how on earth do you find the time to put it into practice. Here are five simple strategies which can change your child\’s diet for attention deficit disorder (ADHD) without going crazy in the process.

1. Forget Feingold diet and other elimination diets. There are too many restrictions in the first and there is too much difficulty in the second! Feingold does not allow fruit which I and lots of nutritionists disagree with, so the first strategy is to pile up on fruits and vegetables in whatever form you like. Smoothies, soups, and whatever!

2. Get rid of all the processed food which is full of additives, colourings and pesticides and all sorts of toxins. There is enough evidence out there, believe me, which says that this rubbish ruins concentration and hypes up kids so that they are hyperactive. That means going organic when you can but without making it a big deal. Most diets for attention deficit disorder make a big deal of this and say you have to bake your own bread!

3. Either buy and serve lots of fish and serve it up. If you cannot buy fish, or you hate the smell, then buy a good Omega 3 and Omega 6 supplement or fish oil supplement. These are also called essential fatty acids (EFAs) and they are just great for brain function. A daily dose of 400 mg is enough. Flax oil comes into this category and without making a big fuss, just put it into the smoothies you prepare for the kids. If you do like fish and the kids do as well, it is better to avoid the fish which have high levels of mercury. These are swordfish, shark, and mackerel.

4. Reduce the level of glucose and try and increase protein. The child\’s brain needs a steady supply of glucose throughout the day. In practical terms, that means having smaller regular meals throughout the day and favouring protein snacks with nuts and whole grains over the carbohydrates, ice cream and chocolate snacks. Discover your health food shops and buy snacks with nuts and other goodies there.

5. Get a good source of multivitamins - this will cover all the things you haven\’t fed the whole family with. I go for one which contains Gingko Biloba as well because I know that research on that one says that it really helps the brain .

Finally get the whole family in on this diet for attention deficit disorder - there are no great changes so if you introduce these gradually over time, nobody will notice.Well, you will notice because your ADHD child will be calmer and even lovable again! A diet for attention deficit disorder is not going to cure your child but it really does help and everybody in the family will be healthier as well.

The other thing which probably keeps you awake at night is what sort of ADHD medication you should go for. The side effects of the ADHD psychostimulants are often so severe ( weight loss, irritability, anxiety, listlessness etc) that your child has to take other medications to combat these side effects. This is ridiculous! Why not find peace of mind by going for ADHD natural cures which are not going to turn your child into a zombie ? Make an informed choice - the link below will open your eyes!
