Just wondering.
I thought that ADD was a neurological disorder. Does that equate with “mental illness” per se?

Is labeling a child with Attention Deficit Disorder Really Necessary?

shadowman asked:

Thinking back, I was a hyper child in school. Never was given medication but was punished when I acted up. (whipping). Now when some children with alot of energy become restless in school, or a mother can’t control them, they are taken to a doctor. Doctors perform a theroized test on them and say they are in need of meds to slow them down. I really think this is a crock. Do you think it is necessary? And yes, I have researched this before asking. I want to know what you think.

The Elements of Attention Deficit Disorder Treatment

Margaret. H asked:

So how exactly do you address something that has so many problems and so many facets to a single developmental disorder. Attention Deficit Disorder or ADHD is one of the more common problems that kids face to day, and this condition is not just limited to kids, but also to those young adults and even those of a much mature age. But of course, the root of the problem often springs up in young children and if you have a child that is suffering from ADHD there are certain new treatments that have come about that you may be interested in.

One of these new treatments is called orthomolecular treatment and what it does is that it gives hope to many children and parents of these children as it is able to address many of the learning and developmental disorders out there. While the human mind is still very much a mystery to investigators all over the world, this new treatment attacks the disorder in a slightly different way. For all the treatments combined, this sort of nutrition programme seems to have the highest success rate by percentage. This treatment has actually come about when psychologists have actually traced the root of the learning disorder all the way to when the mother is conceived with the child and they seem to have practiced some truly poor nutrition.

The mom’s state of health when the baby is being developed in the womb is really important for both the mother and the child, and the severe lack of proper nutrition will lead to deficiencies and learning disorders as the basic building blocks to create a healthy baby is simply not there and thus, the baby has to compensate for this by not building what it deems to be unimportant to survivability. Even an overconsumption of something as harmless as caffeine might cause the baby to be born with such a disorder in their mind. So where do we go from here? Malnutrition during pregnancy cannot be reversed, until of course is orthomolecular treatment, which is able to trigger the areas of growth and development within the brain of the child that seemed to have stopped or slowed down during pregnancy.

Providentially, breast feeding is once yet again getting hold of reputation with women in the United States. It seems astonishing that somewhat so primitive and very important to an offspring’s existence and happiness seems to be presided over by trend and reputation. A few years ago very little women took the occasion nor had the proclivity to employ breast feeding. It was supposed to be too protracted, too inopportune. Civilization did not hold up its fundamental temperament. In so many ways, these faddists reason us to take away ourselves from our individual impulses. This disconnects us from the natural world, and we misplace something of our humanity. Nutrition is really one of the more important things to prevent learning disabilities like ADHD and current treatments seem to be going in the direction to give children hope for the future.

Uncovering Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD

Paul Hata asked:

In today’s world, the mass media is one of the most powerful sources of information. These have enabled people access and research any subject within a few seconds. One of the most researched subjects is medicine and diseases which are lesser known of. Thus diseases like the ADHD are one of the most researched and looked up. ADHD is a disease which mainly affect and is a neurological disorder.

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is a disease which affects people, mainly children, with respect to aspects like impulsivity, hyperactivity, inattentivity and boredom. However there is a controversy surrounding ADHD which states that ADHD cannot be diagnosed and that there are no proper and well defined medical tests to diagnose ADHD.

ADHD can also be defined as neurological imbalance caused mainly due to genetic factors.

The main characteristics of ADHD are as follows:

1) Lack of attention

2) Hyperactivity

3) Lack of control on impulsiveness

4) Inability to complete given tasks

5) Frustration

6) A child suffering from ADHD can be easily distracted.

7) Lacks organizational skills.

8) Can act without thinking too much about the action and its consequences.

Many of the children suffering from ADHD also show anti- social characteristics and rebel against the laws of the society.

Is ADHD really that big a problem?

According to a new report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1.6 million elementary school-aged children have been diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Estimates reveal that about 6% of school going kids has ADHD problems. This figure is only partially representative as less than 50% of cases might be reported, less than that, diagnosed.

Approximately 35% to 40% of the children suffer from ADHD. It is one of the most common psychological defects faced by children today. As per researches conducted in the United States, almost 5% of the children suffer from the problem of ADHD.

ADHD is actually a problem which was very much prevalent in the past too. However it seems as though it is a new kind of disease because of the increasing awareness about the disease courtesy, well defined and authentic media documents and increasing medical research on it.

Causes and Diagnosis of ADHD:

The exact causes of ADHD are not yet known. However experts believe that the main causes of this disease are mainly genetical causes. There are also other factors like environmental causes responsible for ADHD.

ADHD can be diagnosed through various psychological tests. However it is not necessary that these tests are always conclusive. A professional psychiatrist or a psychologist can help a lot in ascertaining the degree and nature of the disease and help in treating the disease.

Conclusion:

A child suffering from ADHD requires the support of his parents, teachers and of all the people surrounding the child. Counseling, various tests and therapies can help the child in overcoming his difficulties and transform him into a truly gifted child.
