I understand that stimulants like ritalin and concerta, etc. make non-ADD people act like they are on “speed” but actually works to slow down the mind of someone who is ADD. Does it help someone with ADD focus better, avoid distractions or both?

yes ,when it slows them down they are able to concentrate better

The stimulation in order to function normally it appears that their chemistry requires the stimulation in order to function normally it does help some add people who will.

Both. people who truly have ADD, their brains function differently. When they take Ritalin or other amphetamines, the drug slows them down. When a non-ADD person takes an amphetamine, they fly higher than a kite. When the amphetamines slow down an ADD person, they are able to function like a person without ADD.
